Things I learned about preparing or not preparing for events in your life...
Always make sure you know what battery sizes you need. I thought my radio was d cells it was c cells...so no radio after the power went out. Oh another thing, may seem obvious, but just have them on hand don't wait till you need them you won't find them then.
Check your portable stove and be sure you have fuel for it. I didn't and couldn't find in the eleventh hour of course.
I guess from both of these situations I learned you need to not just "know" but check and be sure.
Some things I did right...
I turned down my freezer and fridge to their coldest setting to help when the power failed to keep things cold or at least cool longer.
I filled whatever containers I could find with water and put them in the freezer ( days before) so that they could help keep the things at temp longer and also act as water when they melted.
I got candles and matches.
Filled up my gas tank
Charged my cell phone
I did my laundry and cleaned my kitchen/dishes
Some things I will do differently...
other than the fuel for the portable stove and batteries there were some other things I think I will do differently to prepare for other events.
I am going to get battery operated fan, lanterns, and when I can afford it a laptop/portable DVD player, gas cans hopefully 2 gallon ones 5 gallon ones I think would be too heavy and difficult to store.
The fans are for comfort, the lanterns for ease in reading and so I don't have to have candles going all the time, the laptop/DVD for entertainment and outside information I guess a little bit of comfort there to.
The gas cans I think it is obvious but when power and most other services are down it is impossible or nearly impossible to get gas so to have a few extra gallons would have been comforting and maybe allowed for a post hurricane leaving if needed.
Going to think about my food a bit more needed to have had something a bit different better choices than I had.
I was lucky I was only out of power for a short 36 hours there are people who are still out and will be for days yet.
going to go work on pictures to get them on here so till later...

Question - if power is out, wouldn't internet be out? Even wireless? It's all electric, isn't it?
Otherwise, sounds like a plan!
