Well, here are the details of yesterdays visit with my surgeon....
With a total weight loss of 141 and a weight loss since surgery of 125 he is pleased with my progress. And while my weight loss has definitely slowed down from earlier months that averaged 8-10 pounds a month for the first year it is still happening at a remarkable pace. He and I discussed whether or not an adjustment or tightening was needed and since I was not sure on it he did the "do you need an adjustment quiz?" how often are you eating, how much, do you feel deprived, what can you eat, do you feel like you are on a diet? With lap band one should feel not at all like one is dieting but that one is satisfied not only eating so many calories and controlling oneself to prevent eating more than, so feeling like one is on a diet actually is a sign of needing a fill or adjustment. Since I answered all in a way that suggested no need for a fill but my weight loss had slowed a bit he was still willing to leave it up to me. As I was having some more issues with acid reflux again and an adjustment had helped that considerably last time ...we discussed it. What is acid reflux and was it true reflux or a matter of food sitting in the pouch and after a time refluxing back up? I told him it was not food refluxing it was acid from the stomach. He told me that one of the things they are noticing in patients 2-3 years out is hiateal ( spelling?) hernias because the diaphragm was stretched and protected by the fat that is now gone and it isn't closing properly anymore, so if next visit I am having problems again we will need to do a scope and fix it. UGH! I truly hope it is just excess acid churning in my stomach because I recently joined the ranks of the unemployed and that as I put in applications and get a job it will stop. But to help in the mean time he gave me an adjustment of .2 think that puts me at 3.6 in my band. It has helped just as it did last time so hopefully we get to avoid the scoping for a little bit anyway. Should also help to increase the weight loss again.
After nearly 18 months I can still say this was the best thing I could have done for my health. there is no way I would have lost 141 pounds any other way. the tool of the gastric lap band allows me to make the necessary lifestyle changes but not at the expense of the weight loss. It allows me to focus on what I eat and how I eat and not have to worry so much about how much I eat. It is the combination of the band, food choices, and exercise that have made this portion of the journey a success for me.
